GC Spivak states that “If one wishes to make . . .global social justice, one must unmoor it from its elite safe harbors, supported by the power of the dominant nation’s civil polity” In other words, if there is to be “social justice” in poor countries, one must expose the elitist values there. Exposing this value system shows the way to real consciousness-raising. If, say, an organization does not seek Euro-US forms of justice but seeks to set poor countries free from the fetters of “dreaming the American dream,” justice must happen in the particular countries themselves. In my opinion, escaping to the US and fleeing poverty by coming across the ocean or equator only sets those who (im)migrate to a country with no home.
