Babylonian Bureaucracy (don't think black/white)
Bureaucracy is the way of hierarchy, power and subjection. For decades now minority individuals have been in positions more of influence than one might imagine. When you are on the phone to do business and ask for your call to be escalated this is the evidence of the hierarchy’s existence. Often, more often than not, one can be blocked or cut off in the middle of a transaction, and it is not because of inefficiency, it more a measure discouraging the caller. It is the sort of thing that Saidiya Hartman writes about when saying “the enslaved failed to be compensated for centuries of unremunerated labor. They never received the material support nor resources necessary to give flesh to words like ‘equality’ and ‘citizen’” This mixed with a sort of individualism implied by liberalism in the West has left some of the descendents of slaves believing the ideals of “freedom” (to see that empty word’s strength questioned and deconstructed, read the introduction to Hartmann’s work in Scenes of Subjection) from an individualistic focus and demonstrates how such empty words can be given capital letters, making them even worth fighting for, as Simone Weil has said. This is the curse of the West, that there are two sides to every story and foci from which to stake a claim in the argument between Left and Right. So the person of non-color, blank, whiteness is beginning to feel the weight of the bureaucratic state, entrenched in deep state socialism, with all its machinations. The phone call, mentioned above, offers the most salient example of this non-colored approach to the hierarchy felt in its weight. There is a real threat opening within the structures which socialism creates. The threat is not that there would be unstructured chaos, but rather that the federal government would be limiting the “freedom” of the people because of its solidarity with the so-called proletariat. The representation of blackness has overcome the imagination of the non-colored person that all which is seen is a big black mass of socialistic bureaucracy. No wonder the phone call above is so starkly opposed by those without power in that situation. To be controlled and manipulated and pushed around psychologically by the one on the phone, who is backed by so many in the hierarchy of bureaucrats which is so vast that its horizon can never be seen. When the light is gone and the darkness falls then the non-colored will be horrified by the thick blanket which overcomes them. Yes, in fact this group will finally become the “they” which has such misfortune as to have "their" things stolen from them, in the night.
