America

It seems that quite a lot of theology students have been heavily influenced by the anti-nationalist emphasis on denying god-given nature of the United States, it's constitution, and it's bill of rights.  Even orthodox Anglican Lutheran and Episcopal priests and pastors do not preach that the United States is a nation set apart by God as the early framers of the Constitution in our country did whether they were deist or Christian. The big push in academia for a young pastor to be aware of is how much of the anti-nationalist Kool-Aid they have drank.  This Kool-Aid seems sweet to those who would put down the US and find their identities in the strangest places. It seems to think they believe it's counterintuitive to be a Christian and a American at the same time. They would blow off the Christian Roots of their national roots in lieu of having a strong understanding of the land that God has given to God's people. The land was always important in the Hebrew Bible considering the idea of Zion and the holy city.  The question then is were American institutions reared on Christian principles and beliefs. When students of theology stand in a pulpit and misidentify the nature of God's relationship with America and state that America is not our home, there are some strange concerns. As Christians we are part of a kingdom beyond this world yet somehow in this world. But as Americans we are citizens who are responsible for upholding the highest ethical and moral standards.  It is a shame that seminaries are preparing people to underwrite theology that cuts through nationality and puts emphasis on other perspectives about the world and it's evils.  The idea of nation is not a modern or colonial idea. Many people have identified as Nations throughout history, in the West as Nations or in the East has dynasties or empires these notions have been destroyed by Bedouin type beliefs which fine no center or home.  This is a postmodern and postcolonial problem which over time has destroyed our notions and destroyed the way in which we think about ourselves, our identities, and our countries.  It is time for people to stop drinking the anti-nationalist Kool-Aid and begin to note the importance of one's country, even to God.
